Volunteer Handbook
Class Hours
Volunteers arrive half an hour before your class and expect to stay ~15 minutes after
[5:00 PM - 6:00 PM]: AMASE MUSIC (Fridays)
[6:00 PM - 7:00 PM]: AMASE ART (Fridays)
Follow your teacher's schedule
Volunteer Responsibilities
1. Consistency is crucial when working with special needs students so please attend every session!
2. Attendance Policy:
1) A total of 3 Excused Absences allowed.
2) Excused Absences: Notify your class teacher and fill out an attendance form. Documentation such as a doctor's note or a schoolteacher’s note will be required. If absent for a long period of time due to school events, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator (VC) for further guidance.
3) Send absent report email to VC and class teacher by Wednesday night
4) Each volunteer's attendance and time will be recorded for all events and sessions. It will be used as proof for volunteer service and recommendation letters if requested.
5) In the case of an emergency, report to the teachers and follow all immediate instructions.
6) Attendance to all events is MANDATORY for all volunteers.
7) LEADERS are expected to have no absences. In case of emergencies, leaders are required to delegate their responsibilities beforehand.
3. Behavior Policy
Working with special needs students requires diligence and patience, so we ask for your thorough commitment and dedication. If at any time you, a volunteer, acts inappropriately or does not comply with your responsibilities, your parents will be contacted as a warning. Any subsequent violation of the code of conduct will lead to your withdrawal from the program.
4. Confidentiality
All information concerning anyone with a disability is strictly confidential, and must not be shared with anyone and/or discussed at any time, except for the following situations: parent-to-volunteer, parent-to-teacher, and teacher-to-volunteer.
5. Notify Any Changes
Please keep us updated! Volunteers are required to notify the staff of any changes in contact information asap. (i.e., emergency contact, home address, telephone number(s), email address)
6. Class Guideline
- Follow teacher’s guidelines
- NO PHONE USAGE DURING CLASS
- Prepare all art materials and/or music instruments before the start of class.
- Be on time
- Wear appropriate and comfortable clothing (you are working with children and adults)
- Communicate with your buddies and give them lots of encouragement each class.
- Set a good example for both your peers and student
- Be flexible with changes/creative with your actions (role model, show, explain in student's age appropriately)
- Be respectful to all students, volunteers, and teachers at all time.
- Be attentive to the students and volunteers in your room.
- Confidentiality! Do not share photos or information about our students in public forum
- Do not forget you are an assistant of the teacher(s) in your class!
- Check your email regularly.
